Inspiring content from across OpenIDEO & IDEO's other work.

GMC Reflections by Sally Madsen

269 inspirations. 109 concepts. 40 final concepts. These are the results of the Enterprising Schools challenge, and it was the job of our team at IDEO to sort through this treasure trove and prepare it for leaders of Affordable Private Schools from around the world.

While the challenge has 10 winning concepts, we wanted to capture the true abundance of ideas for the ‘Steal This Idea’ catalogue. We pored through the inspirations, concepts, comments and evaluations. (yes, we really read all of them!!) Our challenge was to represent the great content, and to simplify it so it can stand alone and be understandable for people who haven’t seen OpenIDEO yet.

We chose the strongest and most representative inspirations to include, grouping them in the 8 challenge themes. And then we delved into the 40 final concepts—first grouping them into opportunity areas (such as ‘What if learning came to the school?’ or ‘What if teachers had networks for growth’). For many of the concepts we added a business analysis to help potential APS entrepreneurs. And for a select few we showcased the collaborative process by including the OpenIDEO comments and visual collaboration maps. You can
download the final catalogue here!

What’s next? The sponsor challenge GMC is gathering APS owners, funders, teachers, entrepreneurs, financiers, service providers at the Enterprising Schools Symposium in Hyderabad on October 2. Sally Madsen will present the ideas from OpenIDEO, and work with GMC and the conference participants to explore how these ideas can become new businesses.

Congratulations and thanks to the GMC OpenIDEO community! We are so proud of what the community has produced.

Was really fun collaborating and learning from everyone's perspectives and ideas. Congrats to the IDEO team for creating a summary/compilation that not only showcases the diversity, sheer magnitude, and process, but also distills things down to digestible patterns and actionable tools. Looking forward to the spread and application of these ideas to make a real world impact!
