Doctor's Prescription: Farmer's Market!

Massachusetts doctors are prescribing coupons for fresh vegetables from local farmer's markets.
Today's New York Times article http://tinyurl.com/26g7klz about Massachusetts doctors prescribing vegetables to kids in danger of obesity and it's related health risks is definitely an inspiration. Doctors's give coupons redeemable at local farmer's markets where kids can use them to buy vegetables and fruits. This practice exposes kids to fruits and vegetables that they might not otherwise have tried and it also hopefully replaces some of the snacks and sugary drinks that they would normally be eating.

We also have a program where some cities in Massachusetts will double food stamp (SNAP) money at Farmer's Markets (up to a point). It's an excellent incentive to buy real food!

Wow that's great. Motivating healthy eating based on marrying a trusted doctor's prescription with the financial incentive of a coupon. Wonder if there's anyway to get insurance companies to cover some of the costs (i.e., an insured child becoming diabetic, increased the reimbursement costs for the health insurer).

I came across this article, too. I thought the $1 coupon/day/family member is a great way for farmers’ markets to compete with fast-food restaurants selling dollar value meals
