Make it fun to know your food source

Knowing where food comes from and how it was made is an essential part of increasing children's awareness of their food sources. This should be part of their upbringing and can be taught to them in different ways depending on their age. Making it a little fun by actually giving the chicken that laid their egg a name makes them emotionally connect to the original animal or person involved in the production of their food.
The first step can already be reading of books about animals, farmers, bakers etc.
My children always ask me the name of the chicken that laid their egg and I always read it for them, because it happens to be written on the egg. (some number printed on the egg) It helps them realize that it's not just some chicken, but that it was actually a hen called "Betsy" that worked hard for them and produced their egg. This can also be applied to the cow that produced the milk, the farmer that grew the crops or the baker that baked their bread.

wow...from imagination to execution: "creative Betsy". I like it, because it's holistic thinking, collaborate between knowledge and experience.

When I was a kid I remember how much I loved reading again and again the comic strip on the back of the corn flakes package that described how corn flakes were made. There was a step-by-step illustration of the manufacturing process that I found very interesting! Kids are inherently curious to know where things come from.

I like it!
It could also create a link between the food and the well known books which main characters are animals... as the 3 pigs and the wolf and so on :)

I like this too. Not just for kids, adults too.

In Australia, we have labelling for livestock (http://www.mla.com.au/meat-safety-and-traceability/livestock-identification). I think it's RFID technology; it's for quality and safety.

I like this! Sort-of a 'character development' concept applied to food. Interesting idea if an egg company started to publish children's books about a cast of chickens. And then the eggs that they sold could be labelled with the chicken character's names along with some other detail that might carry the book story lines further. Would definitely get kids interested in egg selection and eating. Great idea with a lot of potential!
