Tele-medicina

In rural areas, the clinics and hospitals that exist can only provide "1st level" care, that is, basic consults from doctors that require little equipment and no specialist. Whenever a patient needs a more complex exam or the opinion of a specialist, they have to go to the Manizales, which takes time and can end up being very costly.
What about implementing a system that would use information technology, for example under the form of a computer program, to transfer patient's information directly to the appropriate specialist. It would be equipped with the necessary tools for taking pictures, analysing blood and blood pressure, and the computer programs that would guide the user (be it a nurse, or a doctor) through the examination process required for each type of specialist.

This would allow for quicker identification of possible health issues, and eliminate often useless travels to the city and consults.

Great idea!!! you can add to the value chain tele-education in order to improve the quality ofr the health professionals particulary in the rural area, so you can use the technology and network infrastructure, and use fees for each member of the virtual courses for doing self-sustainable the social business.

Nice concept. I find really interesting the fact that only 7% of the people screened in the pilot project need to go to the city. That shows the value of such a "pre-screening". One might even envision another level of pre-pre screening (that might not even take place in the clinics and the hospital). At the same level, you could also have some advice and tips (to make sure that people stay healthy); this could be done by the trained nurses - thus creating more jobs...

I like the argument that people save their transport money (and time), which can be used to pay for the service.

I am thinking that mobile technology / video enabled phones might provide useful tools along with live mobile video service providers such as the Swedish http://bambuser.com/
