How might we increase the availability of affordable learning tools & services for students in the developing world? Read the challenge brief

Concept

Resourceful Project Catalog

Using recycled materials to create word games, science and art projects .
Instead of trying to distribute many learning tools, it could be easier to compile a manual of interactive science and art projects that can be carried out with readily available materials. This project catalogue would be something like a cross between Make magazine + eHow + howstuffworks. The projects selected for the catalog would be geared towards children, use visual diagrams for instructions and utilize recyclable materials.

 Projects might include:
- scrabble pieces made from painted bottlecaps (See image) {spelling, vocabulary
- chromatography experiments using candy, filter paper and water {chemistry
- density experiments using different objects and liquids {physics
- making whirligigs out of recycled cans and wire {physics, art
- make a tangram set out of paper/wood {shapes, visual
- simple origami projects {geometry, visual
- gardening projects {biology

The projects could be categorized by subject and appropriate age level.

Who would implement this?

  1. A local entrepreneur or small organization
  2. NGOs and Foundations
  3. I would!

Cost

The only cost would be producing and distributing project catalogs for instructors. The instructors could decide which projects to do depending on available materials.

Distribution & Delivery

With the help of an NGO or individuals willing to distribute the catalogs, schools and instructors could integrate the projects into their course curriculum.

Adoption

The instructions would have visual diagrams and step-by step instructions to facilitate use.

What sort of potential do you think this concept has to be a sustainable business?

Very high potential
it's good but it needs a lot of work before going much further
it's got too many open questions right now to say either way
2

How well do you feel it meets the local needs enterprising schools has identified? (English language, Math, Libraries, Technology, Professional Development)

It fulfills really well on the need its chosen to serve
It will help, but other solutions might serve the needs better
It doesn’t really address any of the needs that Enterprising Schools identified.
3

How well does this concept meet the needs of extreme affordability?

Really well. There are likely ways we can make this concept low cost.
Fairly well. It has good potential for an affordable cost, but more work would need to be done here.
Unsure. I can't yet see the ways it could be made to be low cost, but maybe it's possible.
Doubtful. I just don't believe this can be made low cost.

Beautiful idea - empowering teachers and students to assemble their own learning materials!

Happy to help Amanda. By the way – I noticed you'd commented that you liked my Growing Knowledge concept but hadn't given it applause. Did you think it was missing something?

Thanks for pointing that out Meena! The "Trash to Toys" inspiration looks great and I've added it to this concept :)

Nice one Amanda. The project catalogue could also take inspiration from some of the Trash to Toys instructions: http://bit.ly/9G60x6
