How might we increase the availability of affordable learning tools & services for students in the developing world?
Concept
Ritual Schoolhouse: a Seasonal Migration of Space
The rhythms & rituals of life in southern India are set by the monsoon. This schoolhouse, made of a shipping container and a bamboo "track system", allows for screens to be secured during poor weather, and opened wide during beautiful days. I borrowed on Meena's beautiful mural / blackboard idea for the outside of the screens... providing an outdoor learning space. The inside of the screens can be used for projection. I was inspired by a Paul Rudolph house with a similar concept (metal track system) but wanted to incorporate low cost, indigenous materials. I think it's important that children have space that inspire them for learning... spaces that feel open and playful, where they are free to move about and be physical while learning.Who would implement this?
- A local entrepreneur or small organization
- A globally-based social entrepreneur
- I would!
Cost
Using very low cost materials to create an inspiring space that also honors the natural rituals and rhythms of life in southern India. A modern design but materials can be sourced locally and repairs made locally. Also can be easily adapted as a mobile unit.
