Local Content Creation
A rural newspaper empowers its creators and stimulates community awareness. Khabar Lahariya (News Waves) is a weekly rural newspaper written, edited, illustrated, produced and marketed by a group of women – mostly from marginalised communities. Written in the local language, it provides a mix of news, information and entertainment specifically for its rural audience including those with low levels of literacy. It not only provides voice to newly literate women, it has become a significant vehicle for community awareness on a range of issues. The women at KL not only learn about investigative journalism but also take up challenges of distribution and promotion of their paper. Also distinctive is Khabar Lahariya’s collective process of production which takes place over a two-day writing, editing and illustrating workshop.
