Making parents and children realize importance of education through learning tools

The rural families especially in India have a family occupation, mostly agriculture or regional arts & crafts. The children from these families mostly stick to the same occupation. The common complaint that these families have is that the knowledge gained in the schools is not used in the practical life later when the child starts working. So most of the families dont let the child go to school. Parents should be made aware of the importance of education.
Taking into consideration the family background, it is essential to think about "What" the children are going to learn in the school. The topics of study may be different than the topics of study in urban areas. The learning tools should be designed according to these topics.
Them comes the most important part-making them understand that this is going to help them. In India, the children from school are given free food during school hours, which is one way to make them come to schools. Other ways should be explored to make them realize the importance of education.
The "Saksharata Abhiyan" program in India is an effort for elderly people to learn in night schools. In similar way, there can be a program to make parents understand what education their children are going to get in schools. The way used to make them understand should be simple, taking into consideration their illiterate background and culture according to region.

Very much in support of all you've raised here Madhavi. Relates to what they do at Barefoot College: http://bit.ly/dxt4nf with their focus on local relevance.
