How might we increase the number of registered bone marrow donors to help save more lives? Read the challenge brief

Concept

"Saved lives this year and counting..."

Imagine a competition amongst corporations for who could get the most cheek swabs- competition for a great cause! Target corporations that are internationally represented (i.e. high tech companies, software companies, research labs). The winning corporation gets some free donated advertising from a media partner(s).
Imagine an airport like board with that flips every time a person registers and flips everytime a life is saved. The board can be installed in the company's lobby or in the cafeteria, so that it is visible to everyone in the company.
A ticker shows where to register- "To register, visit the physician's booth". The registration booth shall be placed close to the flipboard as people will not have to search for it. At hte registration booth more info will be avialable to increase awareness.

The trigger:
People usually go for lunch in small groups and they could encourage each other to register together after they finish lunch or after the coffee they had together.

The motivation:
Be the winner amongst the competing companies.

Timing:
I could imagine such a campaign around the Christmas time, as this is the time when we do resolutions, make decisions to change our lives, to help others, etc.

1

How easy is this concept to implement?

I could start right now.
This might take a bit of planning and probably some help from several partners.
This is a big undertaking and I'd need a lot of help from friends, organizations and other groups to make it happen.
2

Will this concept successfully reach and encourage under-represented populations (including South Asians) to join the bone marrow registry?

Yes, this concept will resonate with diverse groups of people from all over the world.
No, this concept might not reach under-represented populations very well.
I'm not sure, but I hope so!
3

How well does this concept dispel myths, ease fears, or provide education about bone marrow registration and donation?

Really well -- I already feel like I have a better understanding of the process and why it's important.
Okay, though it'll still take some explaining to get people to understand how bone marrow registration and donation work.
Not very well -- we'd have to create a highly detailed plan around this concept to help people understand.
4

How scalable is this concept?

This concept is highly scalable and could easily impact people all over the world.
This concept is really best suited for small groups and local areas.
This concept could be scaled, but we'd have to refine it for different settings.

Krassimira, this is totally random, but I used to work at Martin-Baker, who make ejection seats! As you drove through the gates every day there was a big sign saying the number of lives saved to date. It was a great reminder of purpose and drive. I think this is a really nice and simple idea.

Arjan, Vincent and Chloe, thanks for the comments! And I totally agree that this is a nice add-on to Chloe's concept to increase awareness and encourage employees to sign up.

Vincent, nice way to connect the two. This is a perfect way to a) encourage more employee to sign up; b) increase awareness of importance of bone marrow donation in the public; c) bring positive press coverage for the companies.

There are companies setting up huge display of carbon counter in public space to raise awareness on climate change. A "life saved counter" through bone marrow donation will definitely flies!

This would be a good component for Chloe's company partnership concept: http://bit.ly/fU5cyM

This is a very interesting concept. It plays well on the competitive nature of large corporations, especially with their competition. The first organisations to target for this could be the ones that are already corporate sponsors for donor-related charities. They already have a connection. I remember that when I tried to organise a run challenge for the big corporation I was part of, it really connected with people because they already knew the charity because we were deeply involved with them as a corporate sponsor.
