How might we increase the number of registered bone marrow donors to help save more lives? Read the challenge brief

Concept

Be My Match - Hear their stories. Meet the recipients.

"Hi, I'm _____. My favorite hobby is _________. Are you my match?" A website that lets potential donors put a human face to the recipient database by showcasing short video stories from actual potential receipiants that are personal and fun, showing people that they are no different from the people who have this condition.
(This can be an extension of my original idea "Pass It On" but was inspired by "Human Connection".)

One of the new successful sites that exist today is the It Gets Better Project (itgetsbetter.org) where people in the community share their life stories to help others cope with the challenges of growing up. Each individual has their own story to tell and that's what makes the site both helpful and intriguing.

To put a human element / face to this, there should be a website to let people "meet" those people who's names are in the database as potential recipients. This can help motivate those who are wavering on whether or not they should register.

The goal of these videos should be to put a face to the "mystery database". They should be short and simple, and should let the user know that these are just everyday people just like themselves.

Testimonials would follow a couple general fill in the blank scripts:

Ex) "Hi, I'm __________. I am a ______________. Are you my match?"
Ex) "Hi, I'm __________. My favorite ____ is ___________. Are you my match?"
Ex) "Hi, I'm __________. I enjoy _______________. Are you my match?"
Ex) "Hi, I'm __________. This is my ____________. We've been married for _________ years. Are you my match?"
Ex) "Hi, I'm __________. I am a __________ and thanks to my donor I received my transplant on ______.

etc

The rest of the website can help answer any of the other questions the person has and encourage them to register.

  1. Misunderstanding

Which step(s) of the journey does your concept apply to?

  1. Awareness

1

How easy is this concept to implement?

I could start right now.
This might take a bit of planning and probably some help from several partners.
This is a big undertaking and I'd need a lot of help from friends, organizations and other groups to make it happen.
2

Will this concept successfully reach and encourage under-represented populations (including South Asians) to join the bone marrow registry?

Yes, this concept will resonate with diverse groups of people from all over the world.
No, this concept might not reach under-represented populations very well.
I'm not sure, but I hope so!
3

How well does this concept dispel myths, ease fears, or provide education about bone marrow registration and donation?

Really well -- I already feel like I have a better understanding of the process and why it's important.
Okay, though it'll still take some explaining to get people to understand how bone marrow registration and donation work.
Not very well -- we'd have to create a highly detailed plan around this concept to help people understand.
4

How scalable is this concept?

This concept is highly scalable and could easily impact people all over the world.
This concept is really best suited for small groups and local areas.
This concept could be scaled, but we'd have to refine it for different settings.

Hi, This reminded me of adoption profiles - http://www.adoptionconnection.org/adoptive_parent_profiles.php - I think it's a really great idea to make a real connection and build empathy like this. I think building empathy is one of the biggest things we can do to motivate people to register.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I think this would cater to folks like me who don't really like reading websites because I'm a bit lazy. I'd rather have someone just tell me what to do. If interspersed with some of these we could have testimonials from those that actually registered, it might help encourage folks that are on the fence as well. The key to all the videos though, is that they need to be fun & uplifting. I think once it gets too sad & I'm afraid folks will just get turned away.

Another great idea Nancy! Really gets potential donors to relate to potential recipients, as well as personalizes the scale of the issue. It'd be also great to build sharing mechanisms into the videos so that they can be virally spread (for example, recipients would forward to friends and families, who would then forward it out to their networks).

I like this concept. Especially if the video's can be hosted on YouTube and shared through social media as well, to increase the chance of making it viral, plus then it's not related to one country's registry. It relates a bit to my '_____ is a hero' concept.
