How might we increase the number of registered bone marrow donors to help save more lives? Read the challenge brief

Concept

BeTheInternationalMatch.org

This concept combines with the Interactive map of registered donors. Please see http://3bl.me/az3ghz or click the colourful US map under 'Built on this' and give comment and feedback there. Convincing people to register as a donor is one thing, but then finding the right place near you is the next. This concept is to globally centralize location data for donor centers, national registries, donor drives and other information on a central site.

During the inspiration phase I was trying to figure out where my registration as a donor was located, and how I could actualize it in the country I live. In Europe, despite intensive cooperation, this information is hard to get in one single place. In many inspirations and concepts, the American registry is referred to. And there is a lot of information on that site. However, I think it would be good to have one single point of information that the different great campaigns that are springing up in several concepts can refer to.

Localization
An important part of this central point of information is the localization. Based on a map, people can see where the different registries and centers are located near them. Also it could be interesting to add upcoming donor drives on the map.

Another application of the localization, as suggested by Karen in the comments, could be to locate donor matches. Especially in cases where the needed type of cells are rare.

Criteria
Based on the chosen location, people could also find out the local/national criteria for becoming a donor. A FAQ like on bethematch.org would be great.

Central storage of donor data
Another helpful section would be a secured central registry, or at least a 'I moved to ...' function, so that it is as simple as clicking a few buttons to indicate that your donor data should be transferred to another database.

As we see now with the disaster in Japan, a centralized registry could also be helpful in cases of disaster, when possibly extra donors are needed because of the results of the radiation fall-out.

This concept needs a bit of extra input and work. Feel free to add/comment to it!

The picture is taken from Google maps. I created a map with the adresses of European bone marrow registries. You can find the map here: http://3bl.me/qfmmcd

Please feel free to add addresses as you see fit :)

Which barrier(s) does your concept address?

  1. Time

Which step(s) of the journey does your concept apply to?

  1. Awareness
  2. Registration

1

How easy is this concept to implement?

I could start right now.
This might take a bit of planning and probably some help from several partners.
This is a big undertaking and I'd need a lot of help from friends, organizations and other groups to make it happen.
2

Will this concept successfully reach and encourage under-represented populations (including South Asians) to join the bone marrow registry?

Yes, this concept will resonate with diverse groups of people from all over the world.
No, this concept might not reach under-represented populations very well.
I'm not sure, but I hope so!
3

How well does this concept dispel myths, ease fears, or provide education about bone marrow registration and donation?

Really well -- I already feel like I have a better understanding of the process and why it's important.
Okay, though it'll still take some explaining to get people to understand how bone marrow registration and donation work.
Not very well -- we'd have to create a highly detailed plan around this concept to help people understand.
4

How scalable is this concept?

This concept is highly scalable and could easily impact people all over the world.
This concept is really best suited for small groups and local areas.
This concept could be scaled, but we'd have to refine it for different settings.

We love this concept, congratulations Arjan & Krassimira. Jennifer Aaker and I will be mentioning it in our talk at the Stanford Conference this Saturday. Thanks again from everyone at OpenIDEO + Haas Center.

Nathan, that is so wonderful. Would the talk be available later through YouTube or other video? Would be very interested. I still want to work on this a bit more, but I'm not sure whether that fits with what the realisation team is doing now. Anyway, have a great talk on Saturday.

Nathan, your (and Jennifer's) superb presention sent me back in the time throughout the journey of the Bone Marrow Challenge...It has been great to dive into the inspirations of brilliant people and learn from them!

Nice, this concept will be combined with the Interactive map of registered donors concept. See: http://3bl.me/az3ghz

Arjan, as we combined our concepts, is there anything we shall do at this point of time to improve the concept? Let me know your thoughts....

I think we should in some way. I'm not sure how it was evaluated by people. But I hope they took the combination into account. Anyway, maybe it's smart to wait till tomorrow. If it's listed, I will update it to include your interactive map and list you as co-creator. Would that be a way to do it?

absolutely, Arjan!

By the way, did you see that the map is an open Google Map. So if you have any drives or centers to add, please do so! http://3bl.me/qfmmcd

Thanks, Justin, for your nice words. To be honest, this concept focused more on donor centers and drives. The one from Krassimira focuses more on donors (see http://3bl.me/7w7dyp ). I am all for combining concepts, and I think you're absolutely right that the combined ideas of this one, the one from Brett and the one from Krassimira make a strong concept. Let's do that :).

Lovely idea about mapping where donors are, Arjan. It makes it very easy to follow and understand by visualising the location.

I just read Brett's 'Know your type' concept, and thinking it would be great if two ideas are combined - Personal genetic testing system which users could track the right match by using the mapping system.

Thanks for your comment, Karen. I think that could be incorporated as well. But having centralized information would already help, I think (and hope).
I'll integrate your comment in the concept, in any case.

Good points here! This idea also makes me wonder if there is something to be said about "medical tourism" and being able to map where your donor matches are located. Maybe even get on a waitlist based on a geographic region?
