How might we increase the number of registered bone marrow donors to help save more lives? Read the challenge brief

Concept

Next time you make a B-day present, make it a Life-saving one!

Searching for a one-of-a-kind birthday present? Next time you make a b-day present, think of a Hero Gift Certificate + Registration Kit. A friend of mine mentioned today at lunch that she gave her husband as a b-day present a “Hero Gift Certificate” and a registration kit for bone marrow donation.
She ordered a “Hero Gift Certificate” for 50€ from the German Bone Barrow Registry ( http://www.dkms.de/no_cache/spender/geldspende/gutschein/index.html). She received the hero certificate + a registration kit, packed it nicely and handed it over to her husband as his b-day present.
Note: If the person you’re giving the hero certificate to, doesn’t want to register, the money goes to the registry; so your money will not be lost….

Imagine how powerful could such a campaign be:
- those who give you the present will ask "so, what happened, did you register?"
- if you receive such a present from someone you care about, you're much more inclined to act
- if the person you're giving the present to, doesn't know much about the process, you can start a conversation

1

How easy is this concept to implement?

I could start right now.
This might take a bit of planning and probably some help from several partners.
This is a big undertaking and I'd need a lot of help from friends, organizations and other groups to make it happen.
2

Will this concept successfully reach and encourage under-represented populations (including South Asians) to join the bone marrow registry?

Yes, this concept will resonate with diverse groups of people from all over the world.
No, this concept might not reach under-represented populations very well.
I'm not sure, but I hope so!
3

How well does this concept dispel myths, ease fears, or provide education about bone marrow registration and donation?

Really well -- I already feel like I have a better understanding of the process and why it's important.
Okay, though it'll still take some explaining to get people to understand how bone marrow registration and donation work.
Not very well -- we'd have to create a highly detailed plan around this concept to help people understand.
4

How scalable is this concept?

This concept is highly scalable and could easily impact people all over the world.
This concept is really best suited for small groups and local areas.
This concept could be scaled, but we'd have to refine it for different settings.

What a beautiful concept! This is a great idea. Could see this almost being a process to get you from registering to donating. You become hero for registering, and something even higher for actually donating, creating a circle of luminaries for those who have actually donated. Nice work!

Larry, thanks for your comments! I do think this is a "low hanging fruit" to 1) get more people to register 2) make it a personal committment. This could be coupled with a campign "Next time you make a present, make it a life saving one!"

Love it! This would be so easy to implement, the NMDP already has an online site to register and get a kit in the mail, so the infrastructure is there, its just turning it from a 'procedure' into a 'gift'. brilliant!

Thanks, Katie and Vincent! The gift certificate comes with a call for action, which is very powerful and creates a ripple effect as well. And Katie, you're right - what a cooler present than that?! Excited to see how my friends will react to such a present.

Great idea. It's like those gift donation cards, but now it encourages increased donation action from the gift recipient as well.

Love it. Fantastic idea. As another play on this, two of my brothers and my fiance have both given me the present of registering themselves. I couldn't have asked for a cooler present.
