How might we increase the number of registered bone marrow donors to help save more lives? Read the challenge brief

Concept

Sweeten the Deal - The swab becomes a lollipop

Watching someone with the bone marrow swab reminded me of someone eating a lollipop. What if the swab broke in 2 and one end was a lollipop. So you get a sweetener in the deal.
A swab that breaks in 2 with a lollipop for the donator to keep and eat.

Also associates the sweetness of lollipops with the act of donation and serves as a nice reminder.

Which step(s) of the journey does your concept apply to?

  2. Spread the word

1

How easy is this concept to implement?

I could start right now.
This might take a bit of planning and probably some help from several partners.
This is a big undertaking and I'd need a lot of help from friends, organizations and other groups to make it happen.
2

Will this concept successfully reach and encourage under-represented populations (including South Asians) to join the bone marrow registry?

Yes, this concept will resonate with diverse groups of people from all over the world.
No, this concept might not reach under-represented populations very well.
I'm not sure, but I hope so!
3

How well does this concept dispel myths, ease fears, or provide education about bone marrow registration and donation?

Really well -- I already feel like I have a better understanding of the process and why it's important.
Okay, though it'll still take some explaining to get people to understand how bone marrow registration and donation work.
Not very well -- we'd have to create a highly detailed plan around this concept to help people understand.
4

How scalable is this concept?

This concept is highly scalable and could easily impact people all over the world.
This concept is really best suited for small groups and local areas.
This concept could be scaled, but we'd have to refine it for different settings.

I'm hoping the Stanford kids will make a sweet prototype. Thanks Sina for putting in a good word.

Brilliant idea, Halyan! It reminds me of how the Jewish children, during the Middle Ages, used to learn the Hebrew alphabet: the letters of the alphabet was written on a slate and covered with honey; the child then licked the slate with his tongue so that the words of the Scriptures might be "as sweet as honey". This positive association is a powerful tool to change people's perceptions.

This is simply brilliant Halyan. I love it. I've talked about it to friends and they all reacted the same.

I love this idea! What if we handed out these lollipops at my Party with a Purpose: Bone Marrow event where after learning about how easy it is, and hearing families speak about what happened when someone didn't donate people would be inspired to finish their lollipops and register leaving the swab behind? How fantastic would this be.

Agreed. This is a fun way to associate fond memories with a good act. The lollipop / q-tip can also come with a story from a child who is battling a blood cancer. Have a lollipop to help a child... strong message.

Nice concept! Really like the idea of combining a reward directly with the action of registering.
