Introducing Our Impact Challenge Advisory Panel

Top row (l to r): Jennifer Aaker, Sandy Speicher
Bottom row (l to r): Ian Sullivan, Jocelyn Wyatt

Our Impact Challenge is flying by and it's almost time to start evaluating our concept shortlist. To help us make smart and informed decisions, we recruited a panel of impact experts who are helping the OpenIDEO team determine the right questions to ask during the Evaluation phase. They're also going to help us choose the Winning Concepts at the end of the Challenge.

Let's take a minute to get to know them a bit better:

Jennifer Aaker is the General Atlantic Professor of Marketing at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, and also a previous OpenIDEO partner during our Bone Marrow Donation Challenge. Jennifer's research focuses on questions such as: What actually makes people happy, as opposed to what they think make them happy? How do small acts create significant change, and how can those effects be fueled by social media? She is widely published in the leading scholarly journals in psychology and marketing, and her work has been featured in a variety of media including The Economist, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, BusinessWeek, Forbes, CBS MoneyWatch, NPR, Science, Inc and Cosmopolitan.

Sandy Speicher leads IDEO’s Design for Learning domain, which brings human-centered thinking to systemic challenges in education. Her work helps students, educators, entrepreneurs, and organisations use the tools and methods of design to work in new ways, to prepare for future challenges, and to transform their organizations and communities. Sandy has collaborated with students, teachers, schools, charter organisations, districts, foundations, universities and nonprofit organisations to develop new solutions that enable learners to thrive in the 21st century.

Ian Sullivan is a digital campaigner with Oxfam GB and a key partner in our Maternal Health + Mobile Technology Challenge. Since participating in that challenge, Ian has become an avid member and contributor to OpenIDEO in other social impact challenges.

Jocelyn Wyatt is the Executive Director and Co-Lead of IDEO.org, the nonprofit organisation started by IDEO to address poverty-related challenges through design and to encourage the use of our human-centered approach to innovation in the social sector. Previously, Jocelyn led IDEO’s Social Innovation practice. Jocelyn specialises in building social enterprises and advising businesses in the developing world, where she uses the market to effect social change. She travels worldwide to grapple with strategies and issues related to product, service and system design.

A huge thanks goes out to Jennifer, Sandy, Ian and Jocelyn for their advice and input – and of course to our stellar community too! Our Evaluation round is an important moment in this Challenge, as it helps us identify which ideas have the best shot at increasing impact. We'll be switching to Evaluation soon – see you there!
