Concept

Permablitz Brisbane

With 300+ events already taken place around the globe, the Permablitz concept is bringing edible backyards back to the suburbs. From Toowong to Texas, Yeronga to Uganda communities have been gathering to transform, inspire and share skills while collaboratively transforming the backyards, cafes and school gardens of the urban environment.
Permablitz Brisbane is helping communities get together and have fun learning about, designing and implementing suburban food systems.

The network functions on the basic premise of reciprocity. Anyone and everyone can come to a Permablitz. We especially welcome first time gardeners. Just come and contribute anyway you are able. People from many different backgrounds and from nine months to ninety in age turn up. Because everyone has to eat, and food gardening is relevant to almost everyone, so you are sure to meet interesting, friendly people of many stripes and persuasions at a Permablitz.

Getting involved is easy. Sign up to the Brisbane Permablitz Newsletter to stay in the loop about upcoming blitzes and courses. You'll get dates and addresses, and then you can just show up, or RSVP where asked. Generally it's good if you can bring some gardening tools, and if you like, some food to share. The host may put out some extra requests for things like newspaper or excess seedlings if you happen to have any to bring along. But it's fine just to bring yourself too.

If you come to three or so Permablitzes we can help organise one at your house. That's right. Permablitz is based on reciprocal volunteer support. Once you've been to a few we can help connect you to a volunteer or professional permaculture designer, help you plan your blitz, promote it, and co-ordinate it on the day. For free.

Love this idea! We had one at our home (main pic above) almost a year ago. It still going strong. It helped build community too. I'm still grateful for everyone who contributed and loved the idea that we can share knowledge to other participants through both workshops on the day and just doing the work together!

this is a great idea. As a Brisbane resident I would like to suggest also, you encourage food plants in garden beds, We grow our cherry tomatoes, chillies eggplants outside the vegetable bed between various flowering plants. Its less formal and suppresses weeds. In fact cherry tomatos can be your weed of choice.

Good luck with your idea

So given this is already happening – what could we propose to extend it to make it concept-worthy, rather than inspiration-worthy (which it certainly is)?
