How might we better connect food production and consumption?
Concept
The People's Produkt
The People's Produkt helps transform "passive food consumers" into "active food citizens". By being involved in the the food production process (from paddock to plate) the people will help promote too. :p :p :p Somewhere along the line, the economy got stupid. Cloned goods and services are differentiated only by marketing. Product, price, promotion are the three pillars. It's time to provide real value; it's time to re-create and co-create PRODUKT.
Here are the three new Ps.
Party
City-folk will have excursions into the country so they can make informed decisions and connect with the farmer. They will be able to converse and capture the farmer / region / produce story. They will be able to taste-test the produce. There will of course, be a party!
Pick
The People pick the produce. It may be actual picking by the Youth, for say, strawberry harvesting. Or it may be virtual, like pick the Farm/Farmer you want your milk to come from.
PRODUKT
The Produkt gets processed using either existing infrastructure (e.g. a small dairy that can gain extra revenue by producing our milk) or new infrastructure (e.g. the community kitchen).
Party, again.
City folk talk up the produce to promote; it's ideal to launch it in a social setting and with taste-tests. That is, of course, another excuse for a party. A local festival (can held some time after harvest) so the farmer can be the guest of honour.
Other
This could be run by the councils (so each council would have their own PRODUKT range) to create ties with the local region. Ideally, the PRODUKT will be staples like milk and artisanal like jams.
Staples because, we need to strengthen the alternatives to the large processors and create an emotional connection so people aren't overly driven by price, so we can (by market means) prevent another #milkwar
Jams and preserves so we can add value to the ugly fruit.
All aboard
Various stakeholders are: local council, regional [?], family farms, small dairies and factories for processing, people, big companies can help with strategic services/cashola in exchange for cred, social programs e.g. entrepreneurial training for some.
