How might we better connect food production and consumption? Read the challenge brief

Realisation

How To Make Things Happen

August 23, 2011, 02:25AM

I catch myself feeling blessed. Reinvigorated by the Local Food Challenge, I’ve continued to pursue FlavourCrusader, an app to connect farmers and food-lovers to create the future of food. How did my crazy idea gain traction and how am I getting it off the ground? Here are some lessons I’ve learned around the Realisation process – moving forward from having ideas to making them happen:

Make it personal
Things will take longer and be harder than you expect. You need to be beyond driven – you need to be obsessed – to see realisation. Motivation comes when your head and heart are fully aligned and if you were inspired from personal experience.

Learning
Although illuminating, desk research is not enough. Having conversations with people who your idea impacts – in real life – is ideal. Learn how people do things now, to improve what they can do tomorrow.

Stay on path
See that mist? That’s what you must navigate to get to your end goal. So how do you stay on path? I started with a fuzzy poem and refined our direction with a vision statement, manifesto and mission statement. Later, metrics will help. However, I’m always open to scenic routes; a fun deviation became a source of inspiration. I’ve received nudges through conversations. I’ve gained kick-starts by participating in various workshops, plus was lucky enough to be invited to the OpenIDEO Local Food workshop in Brisbane.

Rough and ready
You can’t change the world until you take your first step. And once you do, you can learn as you go. Your pixel-perfect grand implementation won’t survive. Make it rough.

People
I’ve been blessed with support from the smartest person I know. Old friends. New friends. Farmers and food-lovers online. Industry. Government. The OpenIDEO community, too. When people believe in what you’re trying to do, nothing can stop you.

I think.

We’re making slow but steady progress, the journey isn’t over yet. Just know when it feels right, it is. The fog clears and the path becomes evident, eventually. Stay tuned for updates.

This is a great concept that can also educate people quite a bit. I think that consumers can get a lot from this app and also learn. There is a book called How to Read a French Fry that impressed me quite a bit http://www.amazon.com/How-Read-French-Russ-Parsons/dp/039596783X
It is very clear and conversational read that that demystifies the chemistry and physics of cooking. Turning some lessons from the book into an app mechanism that is also connected to the location and the freshness of the produce, provides a really nice value to a consumer.

I have a Harold McGee book on food chemistry but that one looks more *digestible*. Thanks!

Hi F.C., I'm a student but first of all a real food lover: from the depth of my consciousness, straight into my stomach. As a young habitants of this Planet I have a "nomad" life. I'm moving a lot through european countries in finding goals in knowledge and work achievement. Therefore, it has been a while that I've left the smoothly hills of my Tuscany. Since that days, as a roman legionary wherever he goes, I promise to my self to don't deal with the food quality. A real curiosity in food processes and its assets has became a passion that foster me in discovery the areas "where everything take place". Ok, in brief, cause otherwise it became a never ending story: I'm interested in this topic and probably in develop it as part of my studies. Simply a thesis, for my Master program in Product Service System Design. For this reason I'd like to know from you something more about this project, its future intentions, or just having some tips and maybe source to see if it a good reason to start digging or better "plowing on this field".

sincerely,
Ben G.K.

I love your idea. I know many young farmers have strong connection to each other and want to innovate and promote farming in Japan. And there are many food-lovers in Japan too. I think this app should be brought to Japan:)

Haha. I love your avatar! I want the app in Japan too! I had the BEST Japanese meal, just a few days ago. Japanese food is soooooooooo good! It's really all about the produce. Oh, have you seen Jiro Dreams of Sushi http://www.magpictures.com/jirodreamsofsushi/
So fabulous, it shows the craftsmanship, dedication and pride in producing good food.

Would love to learn more about farmers in Japan :)

Your ideas to making them happen are so true, you know I can attest very much to that because I have experienced all of it and has come to that realization. Thanks for sharing and for your great work, I am tempted to jump into that, but for a cause I am pursuing which is my first love.....
I think it is when people believe in what you are doing genuinely and ultimately when you believe in yourself....

Whups I think my comment was cut short!

Yes that is true. It's all about being authentic, really. You have to believe in yourself to push yourself beyond your *safe* boundaries... self-belief does waver, but wanting to make the idea reality and feeling people respond to it will always pull you up again.

With the growth of the slow food/locavore movement in the US, this could definitely have international reach. Especially using existing networks like farmers markets and CSAs. great idea!

Ha! I think that's the sixth tip, thanks Alicia. *Use existing networks.* Yes, we'll be working with farmers' markets, CSAs and the like.

Flavour Crusader is particularly of interest to me cos I have a similar mobile application focusing on food production among small scale growers in Africa.
Your application sounds fun especially if you connect different cultures and foods. How thoughtful?

Give me a shout if you require connections from my region. Would be happy to share.

Oh wow, thank you so much! That'd be fabulous :) Whenever I see an article about innovative use of mobiles in farming, it's always about Africa! Brilliant stuff.

It would be a *dream* for FlavourCrusader to go there. And explore every region... every tasty nook and cranny in Italy. Going to work on making this dream a reality too. Thanks Patricio!

Hi Tristan,

Thanks for your questions! If we make Sydney happen, then we'll be looking for the next prime state. I'm hunting for social media savvy farmers. If you find any who sell delicious produce in Brisbane (direct/CSA/FM) ask them to drop me a line.

Ewan is starting up in Brisbane (http://bit.ly/rkIB9d) tho!

One word. Mangoes!

Awesome! Will it work Australia wide? World-wide? I'm in Brisbane and would definitely give it a whirl.
