How might we restore vibrancy in cities and regions facing economic decline? Read the challenge brief

Concept

Neighborhood Enterprise Incubator

A low-cost hub for mobile classrooms, enterprise training, and community enterprise. A path to test ideas, build prototypes, and build livelihoods in the community.

Build a scalable community hub for enterprise and skills training. Mobile classrooms and scalable business kits link back to efficient center.  The concept could encourage shared resources among multiple sites and new ideas by youth and adults alike.

Programs, classes, and enterprise will be shaped by community members and protoyped in a flexible enterprise space. If successful, the programs could advance to mobile outreach, then brick and mortar facilities.

Think 826 Valencia with a little Nike GameChangers and Edible Schoolyard

Community space could also act as meeting and event space for earned operations income.

Will the community create urban agriculture, a print shop, cooking school, mobile tool-lending library, mobile sports fields, artist in residence?

I'm looking to comments and collaboration as I continue to build the idea.

What resources (money, time, people, technology, etc) will your concept need to be successful?

Small flexible space or sublease with street-front centralized in a neighborhood. Adjacent open space for agriculture or sports programs is ideal.

Community design process and work days turning salvaged and donated materials into an identity-rich community space. Volunteer or work pledges from community members and some seed funding for initial 6-month operations. A destination for shared resources (City Bookmobile, existing Community Groups) and a launching point for new ventures.

What steps could you take to implement this idea today?

Gather precedents – successes and failures. Business plan for launch and scaling. Survey community groups for interest and leadership. Grant research. Artist and community vision for the space.

How can your idea be scaled so that it's implemented in cities around the world?

The framework, resources, and classes can be universal and new satellites can grow from a Business’ Cool template. By connecting multiple sites, skills training and resources can be shared regardless of distance.

Michael, this is definitely a great idea. Combining community building with education in a common social hub seems like a great tool towards creating vibrancy in cities and regions facing economic decline. Thumbs up for the drawings!
I am really interested in the idea of community gardens and allotment as a way to reduce poverty and improve food security and living conditions for those in need. Green public garden spaces can not only provide an additional classroom to the community but offer empowerment through knowledge and skills (think about new job skills, work opportunities, individual garden allotments, low cost farmers markets,...). It is a win win situation.
Although the Hayes Valley in San Francisco is VERY different from Detroit, it is a really interesting example of a vibrant community that was slowly built in a very challenging area of the city. Behind graphitti walls, one can find the community garden which is great success. The slow process of bringing vibrancy to this neighborhood makes Hayes Valley now a live and exciting area with shops, markets, pop up cafes, parks, new development and even a biergarten!
Below is the link for the Urban Farm. I hope it can bring us more inspiration.

Thanks for the Hayes Valley farm link Camila! I live only a few miles from here and it has been great to see the site grow and evolve over the first few years including test structures, gardens, and community events. It's a great precedent for a similar scope in Detroit.

Michael, love the idea of a neigborhood incubator. To me, labs offer experimentation for success and failure with lots of room for surprises. You may want to check out Peter Block's and John McKnight's Abundant Community concept whereby community members address their own needs from right in the community. Hey Barb, thanks for the Abundant Community link. I especially like the "What's Working" link http://www.abundantcommunity.com/home/stories.html

Does anyone know of an existing directory of Detroit community organizations? Maybe http://wiserearth.org/ is a good place to start. It would be great to gather interest and feedback from many groups even at this stage. Maybe the mapping, tagging, and connecting of existing orgs is a concept in itself?

Hi Michael. It's a nice idea!

When you talk about "mobile tool-lending library", that reminds me the following initiative (may be very common around the world) ,-)

Great links AnaMaria! That makes me think that the Center could have business bicycles to share that could be modified as necessary with signage, content, and sounds. One day a lending library, tomorrow a food cart. thanks!

Way to go, Michael! Loving your illustration too. I thought you might be interested to check out whether there is anything worth cross-pollinating or building upon from this slightly related concept from our Local Food Challenge earlier this year: http://www.openideo.com/open/localfood/concepting/regional-food-systemcommercial-kitchenfood-entrepreneur-incubatorcollaborative-community/

Thanks for the feedback Meena and for connecting the concepts. The Commercial Kitchen Incubator would be a great anchor for this idea and Samantha's plan offers great specifics to help clarify my goals.
