"Waterfire" and the revitalization of Providence

A series of bonfires floating on the Providence River are lit on summer nights in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The event draws large crowds and has become a symbol of the revitalization and beautification of the city.
Waterfire nights are among my favorite memories of living near Providence. The lit fires are accompanied by music, and though the atmosphere is somber, it is a terrific celebration of the vibrancy of the city. The organization of the event encourages the visitor to explore the river walkway and appreciate the beauty of the city. Most importantly, the highlight of the event is the sheer number of people that come out to join in the celebration. This is where the vibrancy comes in - seeing Providence more full of life than at any other time.

Waterfire is genius with a ripple affect! The evenings begin with the lighting of the fires as crowds gather and music flows gently. As the evenings progress more people gather, artists scattered through the area create mini-events. Food is bought from local vendors and shared with friends and family. The total affect is art and community as one.
