5M Project: Giving life to local communities through art, entrepreneurship and technology

The 5M Project is an experiment in San Francisco to bring together a diverse community of partners with the intention of revitalizing its downtown neighborhood and strengthening its local economy.

The 5M project is a four acre "multi-phase, mixed use development project" in downtown San Francisco. Housed in and around the Chronicle Building, 5M hopes to take the legacy of a San Francisco institution and carry it into a new era. Over the next 10 years, the site will become a mix of low, mid, and high rise buildings for office use, housing, public spaces, and a range of flexible community venues. The hope is to unlock to the power of the local economy and community through strong partnerships and resource sharing - a new ways of doing business and effecting change. Through partnerships with TechShop, Hub, SoMa Central, SFMade, Intersection for the Arts, Off the Grid and SOCAP, 5M is attempting to breathe life into an area of the city traditionally overlooked and under-resourced. By bringing together "artists, makers, designers, funders, students, changemakers, entrepreneurs, tech companies, community groups and local food purveyors," they are creating an example for communities around the world in the power of collaboration.
