A national movement emerging? Vibrant Local Consumer Manufacturing sector and community

“We have given up on inner city manufacturing, but when it is specialized and economical, it can make a real difference.” Kate Sofis of SFMade.org which partnered with Adam Friedman of MadeInNYC.org to create an Urban Manufacturing Alliance.

I see promise for cities in Michigan like Detroit.

"Compared to most other service or retail sectors, manufacturing consistently offers better wages and more benefits for even the most basic job roles, in turn, providing pathways to economic self-sufficiency for individuals with less traditional skills and education."

SFMade.org

“Manufacturers play a critical role in the City's diversified economy. They provide stable jobs, generate significant export dollars, and produce an extraordinarily diverse range of products.”

My personal experience is that in only few short months i've made great headway for the same concept here in Chicago.

I think SFMade is such an interesting idea! Many economically failing cities used to be manufacturing hubs in which businesses have moved out of or failed in due to economic pressures. I wonder if "SFMade" like branding could help support a new wave of manufacturing businesses, while local talent helps power them. I could see people getting excited about products with a "DetroitMade" seal of approval.

Living in San Francisco for a bit, I appreciated seeing businesses with this sticker on their windows! I also read an article this summer regarding how the garment manufacturing process can be locally made in SF. Designers can rent out space and get their production off the ground. With so many manufacturing going oversees, it's a great time to support more local and sustainable clothing.
