Alley Flat Initiative, Restoring and Making Affordable
The Alley Flat Initiative in Austin, TX typically focuses on increasing urban density by focusing on often ignored alleys. Their recent restoration approach could fit in well in Detroit. Some areas of east Austin, TX have vacant buildings and many residents in need of affordable well-built housing. Restoring a vacant main house and existing two-story duplex on the same property into affordable housing is a project taken on by the Alley Flat Initiative.Focusing on maintaining density is an issue some parts of Detroit are dealing with. Making use of easily restored existing building stock in neighborhoods with good levels of density could be a way to get a lot of success out of a little bit of work.
The Alley Flat Initiative also recruits volunteer and student designers to work on the drawings and details to allow available funding to pay small-scale contractors to ensure quality work.
