Art and social engagement in Vancouver!
culturally diverse Vancouver has a strong citizen envolvement , huge respect for artists and important social campaigns that generate change Although not specific to Vancouver, I do perceive a certain kind of vibrancy in this city that has a lot to do with its diverse population, openess to immigrants, and also with the great support that is being given to arts and the creative community. Vancouver could be considered a very young city and in my opinion, It has been doing a very good job in terms of integrating its residents into a big community that values nature, art, and diversity (huge gay community, marihuana use is decriminalized, etc). During the time I lived there I saw several social movements that became strong enough as to actually change policies and trigger change. One of them was the U-pass campaign that asked the local government to provide free public transportation for students of all institutions and not only the Main Universities, after a very exciting campaign and a strong citizen involvment, the u-pass became a reality and a great advantage for students. Also currently there is a campaign going on against data meters for internet billing called the http://openmedia.ca/. this is an important step to protect the freedom of communication and acces to internet from big corporations wanting to restrict our access.
This are big topics and big steps towards progress I believe and it reflects a specific type of vibrancy that in my opinion is most important, which is citizen involvment and active participation for the things that matter and affects us all!.
I´m sure this is not specific to Vancouver but I wanted to put it out there as an example of what I believe Vibrancy should be all about in desperate times.
