How might we restore vibrancy in cities and regions facing economic decline?
Inspiration
Artists and Revitalization
Looking at post-war cities like Berlin and Munich, what assumptions can we make of the relationship between artists and revitalization? What is the relationship between artists and revitalization of cities?
Cheap rent, availability of space, open creativity....it can be a long list.
Creativity flows when limits are not restricted, when space and time allow artists to just be themselves.
Didn’t the Soho neighborhood used to be where the artists conglomerate in the old days in NYC? Take a look at the Glockenbach area, the first gay and artist district in the conservative city of Munich in Germany. Nowadays, these are thriving and vivid neighborhoods, filled with life, energy and financial prospect.
Coming back from Berlin not so long ago I was amazed with the international community of artists, musicians and citizens. The city is growing with inspiration and diversity, and so is its wealth.
Taking a closer look into the process of migration and revitalization within a creative community is worth another glance. Identifying the incentives and possibilities that lure diversity and the creative force should be taken into higher consideration.
Just like
any other big city, things change from day to night. The artist’s studio that
used to be cheap rent becomes a high-end luxury designer’s gallery. What are
the lessons we can learn from such examples and apply them towards a positive
revitalization and creation of a vivid city? How can we do this while maintaining the possibility for creative community and newcomers to live together?
