CowParade

Imagine yourself walking on the streets in Paris, and passing by a life-size cow, all painted and colorful. And not just one, many of them. And then flying on vacation to Boston, only to have the exact same experience there.
This is what happened to Adrien. He experienced the CowParade.

CowParade is supposedly the largest public art event in the world. CowParade events have been staged in over 50 cities worldwide since 1999 including Chicago (1999), New York City (2000), London (2002), Tokyo (2003), and Brussels (2003). Dublin (2003), Prague (2004), and Stockholm (2004), Mexico City (2005), Sao Paulo (2005), Buenos Aires (2006), Boston (2006) Paris (2006), Milan (2007), and Istanbul (2007).

It is estimated that over 100 million people around the world have seen one our famous cows.

But why cows?

"Simply, the cow is a universally beloved animal. The cow represents different things to different people around the world-she's sacred, she's historical, she connects us to our past-but the common feeling is one of affection. There is something magical about the cow that transcends throughout the world. She simply makes everyone smile.

As an art canvas, there is no other animal or object that provides the form, flexibility, and contiguous breadth of a cow. The three shapes (standing, grazing, reclining) provide artists with subtle, yet interesting angles and curves to create unique works of art. The basic cow form is also benign so that it can be altered, transformed, and morphed into completely other animals, people or objects. Incredibly, over 2500 hundred Cows have been created worldwide, but no two are alike."

This inspiration was brought up during an OpenSTORM in Paris at ME310, a Design Innovation course at Ecole des Ponts ParisTech. The team included Adrien and Coralie (from France), Sander (from Estonia), Takuya and Kazuhiro (from Japan) and Sarah (from Morocco).

CatParade!
Since 2006 There are cats in Cali-Colombia, the cats are near to the river of the city and around of a big cat sculpture, it was an intervention made by several artist of Colombia. The organizers also made a contest for children. You can still seeing people walking and taking pictures around them and the place looks great! People who didn't know that part of the city were up there and moved with comfort and confidence, they appropriated the space!

Hey Adriana! Thanks for sharing these amazing examples! I love (LOVE) the shoes one! It's really great to see cities giving a space for creation for their local (and not so local) artists.

We had the cows in Vermont also, they called it "The Cows Come Home" and local businesses hired local artists to paint them (As Carly was saying about the Moose in Toronto), many companies used it as advertising and then the cows were auctioned off to benefit the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger. Here's a link on more information: http://www.vermont.org/cows/index.aspx

I know this as I saw them in Boston back in 2005 or 2006. I thought at that time that I would love to create mechanical robotic and artistic cow.

YES!
In summer of 2000 or 2001 in Toronto we had "Moose In The City" where hundreds of moose statues were placed around the downtown area. Each was painted by a different artist or group (school, community, etc). I really liked the moose because they were fun to spot & the moose is a very beloved Canadian animal so not only did Torontonians feel a connection to them but I'm sure tourists had fun 'spotting a moose' in an urban area!

Hello!
Some years ago, in the city of Barcelona, I saw some pianos in the streets. The pianos were waiting to be played by anyone who wanted to. I was with my cousin and she played some song for all of us.
This video shows it:

The idea looks to come from here: http://www.streetpianos.com/
