Cultivating a Sense of Local Pride and Belonging
There seems to be some magic that we can tap into by looking at the trademarks (history, folklore, personality) of a city and its neighborhoods. Cities are more than just where we live; they gives us a sense of place and belonging. Baltimore's Urbanite Magazine sponsored a competition last year to explore possibilities for change in Baltimore by bringing together unlikely collaborators, for example, a Maryland "folklorist" and a design professor. Two of the four final concepts that resulted from this project built on the "charm" Baltimore maintains even in the face of loss of industry, high crime, food deserts, and loss of population. It is powerful to think about what a city means to its residents' identities. The results of the Urbanite project suggest that we can learn a lot by engaging residents in talking about the identity of a city and its neighborhoods. Team 4 asked Baltimore residents questions like, "If Baltimore were a fabric, what would be our common threads and colors?" Perhaps, asking these kinds of questions can help us rebuild around the essence of what brings people together in a city. I think that by visually and publicly emphasizing the shared experiences people have within a city we can cultivate local pride and, in turn, local investment!
