Eliminate Brownfields!

Brownfield sites are abandoned or underused industrial and commercial facilities available for re-use. Some cities convert them into residential condos or lofts while other let them sit there and deteriorate.
There is nothing worst than passing through a city or town and seeing a stretch of abandoned boarded up buildings.  These cities and urban developers need to take "Brownfields" seriously and work hard to ameliorate the problem as quickly as they can.
This ongoing issue that most of these cities face affect the job market, real estate, and overall safety of these environments.
Brownfields creates a stigma that is attached to the city that prevents revitalization and mobilization.

It's true, brownfields are quite depressing. So my question is: how would you go about this? What would you do to eliminate them?

Perhaps one way of recycling or reclaiming them for use would be to refurbish them into creative places where people can meet. Similar example is how some deserted buildings were turned into 'ruin pubs' in Budapest, Hungary during the last ten or so years. One of them, Tűzraktér, was actually turned into an independent cultural center (http://www.openideo.com/open/vibrant-cities/inspiration/independent-cultural-centers-in-budapest-hungary/)
