Mission #3 Get Active Find out more...

Get on your bike!

Cars take over the roads of London everyday but for one evening a month Critical Mass brings cyclists together to reclaim the roads!
Critical Mass (for bicycles) happens in a number of cities around the world on the last Friday of the month. Although it is a non-organised event with no leader, no route or no start time, hundreds of bicycles hear about it and turn up to join in.

From BMXs to tandems to fixies to choppers, everyone with a passion for being with other cyclists or for people who want to show cars that we have rights too, form a mass so that cars come to a stand still.

No route means that the person at the front leads the way and everyone follows.

It's free, brings a community of cyclists together and is so much fun.  The atmosphere is VIBRANT - music is played, bells are rung, horns are honked, you name it, the streets come to life!  Watch the video for the full effect.

I'd be fascinated to see this at work in Detroit, on a once-a-month basis. Too many people I know get their bikes stolen here. There's safety in numbers, though!

Interesting comment. People are always having their bikes stolen in London too but people love cycling and there is a real cycling community. Do you know if a critical mass event does exist and you don't know about it?

If it's going on here in Detroit, and I don't know about it... it may not have reached critical mass. :)

Great call, L! We're seeing some fab Inspirations roll in on cycling – you might want to connect to some of them using the Build Upon feature. Now that folks get email notifications on builds, we're finding Build Upon a great way to kickstart conversations between global collaborators who have been inspired along similar themes.

Good suggestion, Meena. I know there were inspirations to build on but realised I hadn't booked marked them and then found the system wasn't finding them when I did a search... I'll go through the other inspirations later and get them included in the Build!

Hopefully Build Upon search is working again now. I just checked from my end & it seems ok but I know at times it can be a bit glitchy. Seems like it's working for uber-collaborator, A-L! ; )

Meena, to tell you the truth I just relied on my memory and did a manual search. I remembered one post which was referring to all the others. :-)
