How might we restore vibrancy in cities and regions facing economic decline?
Inspiration
Create excitement !
How does it work??Do we want to get people excited about our city? If the answer is yes, we have to take motivators and hygiene factors in to account.
The theory of Herzberg (Two factor theory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-factor_theory ) basically says that satisfaction and dissatisfaction are NOT opposites. You have
1. Factors that cause satisfaction if they are present, however, if they are absent you are in a ‘neutral state’. These are the things that trigger a ‘Wauw, that’s cool’- reaction such as the Moulin Rouge or the Eifel Tower in Paris, Time Square in New York, Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and many others. Or aspects that make your live much more convenient or pleasant such as bike rental, colourful decorations, etc. These factors are called ‘motivators’.
2. Factors that cause dissatisfaction if they are absent, however, if they are present you are in a ‘neutral state’ Examples are a clean environment, green/parks in the city, etc. Singapore is often called 'clinical' as it is extremely clean but it does not get me more excited about the city. Shanghai on the other hand has many beautiful buildings and sights, however, friends that live there have questioned the 'attractiveness' of the city because of unclean streets. These factors are called ‘hygiene factors’.
It is important to figure out which factors trigger satisfaction and which trigger dissatisfaction in your city. The ‘excitement’ is definitely caused by motivators; however, you have to work on hygiene factors too (and probably first).
