Hack the urban landscape
A major plight of decaying cities is abandoned space. Rework traditional real estate and zoning laws to make these spaces flexible and available for cheap use for people with big ideas. The link provides a fairly good description.I think that we need to reconsider what open space means in dying cities and consider how it can be used most effectively. Concepts like urban farming, squatting and communal spaces have been springing up in my hometown of Buffalo, NY. The question is how we make this a more formal part of our urban environment and make it easier for people to access this form of cheap capital. In this way, these spaces become platforms for entrepreneurial growth, thereby growing the local workforce and driving investment back into the city. As these companies become more formal, they can then join what we consider to be the traditional real estate model.
