Inspring Entrepreneurship Among Youth Can Transform Declining Economies

Spain, like several countries, has been facing economic decline, including high unemployment. For youth, that figure is over 40% in Spain. This segment needs to be inspired and Escola Emprenedors is integrating entrepreneurship into schools to do so.
One of the factors associated with high unemployment for youth in Spain is that the education system is not preparing students to successfully join the country's workforce. Education sector experts say the curriculum is stagnant and outdated, not giving students the opportunity to find their voice and be creative. This undoubtedly has a negative effect on the economic empowerment and vibrancy of the city I live ub - Barcelona. For the last 3 years, Escola Emprenedors has been working tirelessly to refine and scale an education reform initiative to bring entrepreneurship teaching into public and private schools in Barcelona. In brief, the program provides the teachers and the content to run a 12-week program where secondary school students work in teams to design a business plan from concept to final pitch. The results have been great with near-failing students now on track to graduate and hundreds of students finding a voice and a passion.

Imran,
I went to IESE and loved the entrepreneurial spirit in Barcelona, so thanks for sharing this. I would be curious to see what you think about "BIZDOM University" http://www.bizdom.com/ - this is an organization that trains, mentors and funds aspiring entrepreneurs to launch innovative, growth-oriented startups in Detroit - and it appears to be getting positive traction.

Fred,

Thanks for getting in touch. This is a great find - thank you for sharing. I've heard about similar efforts in Barcelona being connected to the business school community through ESADE but I haven't seen an organization like this in the states. I think this is a fantastic idea to not only spur current entrepreneurs but encourage youth as well to think of these entrepreneurs as role models. Would love to see something like this scaled US-wide.

All the best,
Imran

I like the idea of adding programs to the Detroit area schools. Please take note of the immense problems we face, however.

Pay special note to the comments being offered below the blog post by Detroit area residents.

Hey Imran, are you already connected with Ashoka's Youth Venture in Spain? Great partnership potential if you're not already working together as it's the same vision to get youth to develop entrepreneurial skills and create change in their communities. (I'm working on Ashoka Youth Venture in East Africa so ping me if you want more info)

Hi Jenny - Thanks for the post. I'm actually not connected with Ashoka's Youth Venture here in Spain. I am leaving Spain shortly but would be very interested to connect the folks at Escola Emprenedors with Ashoka. Let me know who would be the right person to get in touch with. Thanks!!

Hey, nice insight. I am currently doing my exchange semester in Barcelona, in ESADE business school and I am actually quite impressed with entrepreneurial projects that are supported by the university, especially through ESADE Creapolis. Wish I had that in my university

Hanako - that is great! I am at ESADE, too, and interestingly enough, this program is connected to ESADE. If you want to get involved or learn more, feel free to shoot me an email: imran.oomer@gmail.com. What a small world!

Wow Hanako – great the connections that get made via collaborators and Inspirations here on OpenIDEO. Maybe you can do some joint brainstorming for the upcoming Concepting phase. Fab to have you both onboard!
