Look to the Northeast on Refurisbing Old Buildings
Non-profits play a vital role in using empty housing and providing activities and engagement for the community. The New England Quilt Museum is an example of a non-profit that engages the community through programming.Detroit’s current problem of surplus housing and a diminishing population is akin to the scenario of the New England towns with the disappearance of clothing manufacturing in the early twentieth century. The towns of Lowell, Providence and Nashua all lost population and business. A vital factor is all of their recovery is their embracing of non-profits. Non-profits fill the void between business and people by providing interesting services that may otherwise go unserviced while also inhabiting housing stock. The New England Quilt Museum in Lowell provides a museum and meeting space that foster community while celebrating the area’s heritage.
