Bringing people together -Night Bikers of Brasilia

How a cycling group in a big city can provide besides health, sightseeing , sense of responsibility, civility in transit, cooperation and long lasting friendships.

It's like any other evening out: lines, flashing lights, and you all the time with a bottle in your hand.

Bringing vibrancy to the city is a good way to describe the Night Bikers of Brasilia (Pedal Noturno DF - PNDF). It's an open group (anyone can just join the ride) that meets every week night to encourage people to get out of their homes to ride a bicicle through Brasilia's best hot spots chatting and making friends.

Its philosophy is that any person can ride a bicycle, needing only desire and the necessary equipment (bike,helmet, gloves, front and rear lights). And they provide good company.

Besides the wellness and the ecological matters, it builds a sense of cooperation based on some rules that are widely spread:

- The group is always together (even for safety reasons). The ride is calm, stopping occasionaly to reassembling the group, observing traffic rules, pedestrians and vehicles, and, specially helping and guiding the beginners. No one is left behind (if a tire is punctured or a chain breaks, everyone stops and waits for the repair). It's a ride, no hurry needed. The beginners are very important, so everyone is motivated to welcome and help them and they dictate the pace of the ride.

Because of these rules it's a group that really makes long lasting friendships and builds a family with people that trusts one another and give each other support in or out a bike. It builds a social net so strong that they may wake up in the early morning or even travel just to cheer up a friend at a competition.

Everything that happens is posted on a home page and on an e-mail group, what spreads even more the idea. There's also a uniform that identifies the members wherever they are. There's even a "game" to take pictures wearing the uniform in trips. There are pictures in Egypt, Disney World, among others.
