Not your average pie: How a small business revived a struggling town in rural America.
The pie served at PieLab in Greensboro, AL is not just any pie, it offers job training and employment opportunities to local single mothers, prisoners, at-risk youth & seniors. A simple concept with a great reward. In Greensboro, Alabama there is not much industry; therefore, there are not many citizens locally employed. PieLab was and is an innovative small business that decided if jobs were not available locally then it would create them.PieLab utilizes local programs to increase its capacity as well as providing employment and job training opportunities. PieLab partnered with the Department of Human Resources (DHR) TANF & Senior Employment programs to hire single mothers and seniors. The State Cattle Ranch provides prisoners job training opportunities at PieLab through their work-release program. The local at-risk youth programs have students in PieLab learning hospitality skills to later gain employment in the food service industry. And the list goes on.
Lessons are (but not limited to) - (a) celebrate what your community already possesses (b) small business, small business, small business (c) form as many diverse partners as possible in all aspects of life & work to make your idea become a reality.
