Nuit Blanche: Artists taking back the night

Nuit Blanche is an all-night celebration of the arts. Streets shut down to traffic and open up to people from dusk until dawn, inviting residents to see, hear, touch and experience contemporary art across the city.

Starting in Paris and now all over the world, for one sleepless night people are invited to explore and experience hundreds of contemporary art projects--from small individual projects down dark alleys to massive installations in public squares.

In Toronto, artists and curators created fireballs, held sleepovers in empty subway stations, walked through water, screened films in city parks and even flew across the sky. Nuit Blanche is a thrilling new way for the arts to engage audiences, connect citizens and turn a dark autumn night into a celebration of expression. Its my favorite Toronto activity!

Nice one. I remember really enjoying the Long Night of Museums in Berlin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Night_of_Museums

Wow this sounds really cool! No surprise that it started in Berlin...

Nuit Blanche is also great as after a few years many businesses will start to stay open later, encouraging people to go to new places that they may not have the time for normally (pubs, restaurants, art galleries, etc). Also, public transit stays open a bit later which is always nice.

Carly, your comment about business and transportation staying open later highlights a great point. I think it's one of the common aspects of each city I've visited that I'd describe as being especially culturally and socially vibrant.

I think there's also a relationship between safety and late-night activity. Locations need to be safe enough for people to want to stay out, and by having late-night activity, these areas also tend to remain safer in the evenings.

Jennifer, one of the great things about Nuit Blanche is exactly how you put it--with people coming together in common experiences, dark and otherwise uninviting areas become busy and engaging. Honestly, the biggest danger might be from "art lovers" enjoying their beverages a little too overzealously but generally there are few if any complaints about crime or vandalism at NB. Also key is transportation--in Toronto the subway runs all night to facilitate the event and make it more accessible to those outside of the downtown core.

I really like the idea of Nuit Blanche. And I have a related inspiration which I will contribute later. The only downside for the one in Paris, I found, was that the events were too spread. It took a lot of travel to see things. But... that could be a good thing to consider when turning this into a new concept.
