Pavements to Parks San Francisco

Pavements to Parks takes excessively wide zones of wasted space throughout the city and converts them into little parks and plazas where people can come together and hang out. They have also beautified the city.

A similar program was applied very successfully on the other coast, in NYC, starting in 2009. Broadway through Times Square was the test zone where chairs, tables, and walking areas were laid out, and the test was so successful it was made permanent the following year. If zones as high-traffic, over-utilized, and high-visibility as the NY stretch can be recommissioned to be safer and serve a social purpose, it bodes well for the growth of this program in other urban areas.

I love this, great post ! The programme allows shop owners to nominate one or more carparking spaces outside of their shop for the city to turn into a parklet, so demonstrating that pedestrians do create more commerce and business opportunity for shop owners than vehicular traffic.

Hmm...locals nominating unused/underutilized space for better uses...seems very relevant for Detroit!
