How might we restore vibrancy in cities and regions facing economic decline?

People Make Parks
People Make Parks helps communities participate in the design of their parks in New York City. When citizens engage with government and weigh in on park design, government builds better parks, and the public continues to enjoy and care for places they helped make.
People Make Parks supports collaboration in park design between invested communities and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation encouraging a diversity of participants to lead in the creation of meaningful places.
The website provides residents with the tools to show their support for their local park, creating a community of passionate locals who are willing to work with government to revitalise their public space.
Could this type of community led approach be extended to encompass more than just parks in revitalising entire cities? Could it work to build community and morale? How could government provide the knowledge and resources needed to support and empower such passionate communities?
