Providence: arts in fits and starts
Providence. I love my hometown. In many ways it represents so many cities across the country that are trying for their own renaissance. Providence has been through ups and downs, but it still perseveres. In the early 90s, Providence was, perhaps prematurely, dubbed the "Renaissance City". Major investments had been made in infrastructure, and new parks and public spaces adorned areas that had previously been inaccessible. However, Providence's renaissance really took off when the arts began to flourish. It was no mistake or coincidence. In the early oughts, then-Mayor David Cicilline created the Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism in Providence. I was lucky enough to be an intern with this young department, and help with production of the city's first major citywide concert cities in a generation.Growing up in Providence, I never spent much time out in the city. There wasn't much foot traffic at all downtown. Like many post-industrial east coast cities, downtown was a "get in, get out" place where few people desired to be. In 2003, with the arts booming, Providence became a bona fide destination. Music festivals like Sound Session brought thousands downtown. Since then, there was an effort to build high rise and luxury housing, which by many accounts was less than successful. However, the arts remain, and downtown continues to be a destination for musicians, artists and creatives across New England.
