Sunday Streets SF

Sunday Streets is a series of events put on by the City of San Francisco to encourage health, community and fun. They close off miles of roads for people to get come together and walk or bike safely without worrying about cars, or even do some yoga.
Sunday Streets is a series of events put on by the City of San Francisco to encourage health, community and fun, inspired by similar events in cities throughout the world. A Sunday Streets event creates a large, temporary, public space by closing off stretches of a neighborhood’s streets to automobile traffic, and opening them to pedestrians, bicyclists, and activities for several hours on a predetermined Sunday. London has an annual event too, Angel - the Sky Ride is a lovely way to get everyone out and about on their bicycles! http://www.goskyride.com/london

It's really a nice way to call the community fo a healthier life and sure brings more people together.
Here in Brasilia, since 1991, the main street is closed on sundays, holding all kinds of events from street carnival to protest marches. Every weekend lots of families meet there for a walk, a bike ride, skating or some sport competition.

I *loved* this when I was in SF earlier this year! It certainly makes for a vibrant, community-focused city.
