Swings Tampa Bay

Swings Tampa Bay is a very simple community-building initiative. Cofounders Reuben and Hunter hung swings around their neighborhood to see what would happen.
Swings Tampa Bay is a very simple community-building initiative. Cofounders Reuben and Hunter hung swings around their neighborhood to see what would happen. In an incredibly successful response, neighbors began to talk, play and share stories around these new swings. The movement has now grown to include "Let's paint swings!" events and commissioned swing installations.

The simplicity and playfulness of this installation is an inspiring lesson in community-building!

Makes me want to hang swings, too.

It also reminds me of the experience of going to The Gates, the Christo exhibit in NYC's Central Park. As I walked around, I noticed that people would gather at places where there was a good view, and start talking to each other spontaneously.

I wonder if this is only because it's an unusual event, or could be part of daily life?

I love situations like that! You should create an inspiration building on this one, and try to pull out the reasons you think people might have been in a comfortable place to talk to strangers, I think that's a huge step towards putting together a healthy community: What did they talk about? Did they have a common goal of finding the views, or was it just a conversation topic? Were they excited/annoyed/neutral/happy/sad about the gates?
