Umpqua Bank restores vibrancy in local communities

This is a story of the bank that cares about local communities, participates in social life of a town and helps people to be closer to each other.

Umpqua Bank has rolled out a new iteration of its award-winning neighborhood store concept in Seattle’s Capitol Hill district. The Capitol Hill store features elements not yet found at other Umpqua locations including the “Discover Wall,” an interactive touchscreen that digitally showcases financial tools and product information, along with videos by local artists.

The wall also incorporates something Umpqua calls its “Return on Responsibility” module, featuring real-time information about the ways in which Umpqua supports the community engagement — hours volunteered by bank associates, youth financial literacy initiatives, charitable contributions made by Umpqua, etc.

Other features in the 2,897 square-foot location include Umpqua’s “LocalSpotlight” program featuring local merchants and there products. There is also café space for consumers to bank online, surf the web and explore Umpqua’s in-store digital experience.

And are you ready for this? There’s even a hotline phone so customers call the bank’s president directly.

The funny story about Umpqua Bank is that they were the very first to have the "flagship" store concept (the first one was in Oregon) that was then used by many giants (including Citibank). The sad part is that they kept the "Apple Store" feel of it (using impressive interactive walls, nice interfaces and sleek furniture), and got rid of the community events part of it.

Sorry, I didn't catch it. By "They" you mean giants and others who copied the idea? Or did Umpqua also get rid of community events part?

Yeah, it's a nice business model. Really human centered. But I've never thought of it as vibrancy restore tool before. We've found out already that communities are the heart of any city. Human centered services could help restore vibrancy and bring people together.

Awesome, agreed that it really shows what kind of an impact business can have (even banks that are often seen as impersonal these days), if they can align around a social/community purpose, beyond simply profit.

Nice call Vincent – for social dividends to be a driver as well as financial ones!

I've just found out that Deutsche Bank copied this model for its office in Berlin! http://www.flickr.com/photos/deutschebank/3417517397/in/set-72157616424811198/

Agreed, great find.
This is a very interesting concept, that at least in the US has proven not to work, especially with rising unemployment.

Anyway it is an extremely interesting point, and a good start for US local banks to learn about.

Joaquin, thanks for the additional data!
With my friends we had discussion before if solutions lake that could help us with our challenge. It's true that the concept doesn't help much to fight economic crisis. And unemployment is a key factor here.

Oh, something different: links don't work in the summary part of an inspiration (or concept). So it's better to put them in the description section. Or in the comments. Like this: http://www.umpquabank.com
