Optimism from a Piano Staircase in Sweden

An unexpected surprise greets everyone on their way out of the subway: a piano staircase that plays notes when you step on a key. What kind of song will you play?
While this project was created to encourage more people to take the stairs instead of the escalator, it was one of the first things I thought of for this OpenIDEO challenge inspiration. I might define a vibrant city as an optimistic place where everyone lingers in public spaces for just a little while before they continue about their day. A vibrant city is a place where citizens can slip some creativity and reflection into their daily routine, which is particularly important for languishing cities. Optimism and a healthy state of mind is critical for encouraging innovation and prospects for more economic benefits. An optimistic city is one that attracts businesses and industry.

"Piano stairs" from The Fun Theory is an engaging public installation that doesn't ask anyone to think too hard. We are all busy and pre-occupied, but a city can make our lives better. Vibrant.

Meena, thanks for your comment, it's really great that you're here. FunTheory is very inspiring, and it is truly a pleasure to have a place like OpenIDEO to express what each of us finds so powerful about their projects. FunTheory aside, what do you think about the idea that optimism and creativity is critical to revitalizing a city?
