The Polis Blog is a great resource, especially their articles on
Detroit such as this one.
In 2010 Time reporter Madison Gray spent a year in Detroit,
his experiences reporting from Detroit are posted here.

Project for Public Spaces have a comprehensive website where you can get an idea as to how the design of the public realm can create economic, social and environmentally sustainably cities. Many inspirations over on the challenge page illustrate the impact of pop-up infrastructure in cities, a phenomenon which PPS has labelled 'Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper'
Danish architect and urban designer Jan Gehl blogs about human scale cities over at Making Cities for People. Listen to his recent interview on reviving the urban city from a human perspective.
Jane Jacobs, an urban activist and guru for championing grassroots urban renewal projects. Wander around Greenwich Village in New York City and you'll experience the results of her work in saving this vibrant area from government urban planner Robert Moses, whose work is visible in the highways and bridges of NYC. Jacobs' book 'The Death & Life of Great American Cities' is a good resource for further reading, or for a quicker summary, a video like this one.
