How might we design an accessible election experience for everyone? Read the challenge brief

Concept

"Ready to Vote" Toolkit

Before the voting day, it's important to make the crowd be aware of the voting information. At the same time, government shall prepare logistically to enable everyone to cast their vote.
The solution here assumes the country has the basic Infrastructure to validate a citizen's identify with his identify number and personal password. (similar system as Singapore's Singpass)

The toolkit shall include the following material:
  • a Video Demo (similar as in-flight safety video) on the voting procedure, how to  write voting ticket, how to vote online, and how to use voting machine. The video shall be role playing the voting procedure with subtitle and sign language.
  • Booklet (in Braille format also) to explain the voting procedure, how to write voting ticket, how to vote online, and how to use voting machine, and a phone number (voting hot line), and link to a website for the voting guidance.
  • a map on local voting station with signs of available voting facilities for disabled
  • the hot line shall offer 3 functions
  1. an audio guide for "voting with phone"
  2. to answer everyone's question regarding the voting process
  3. Everyone with special need will be to call in for help. e.g. blind people who cannot operate phone voting can request volunteer's help to walk to the nearest voting station.

* The concept here addresses the technical aspect of voting. (how to vote, where to vote). It Intentionally lefts out the part of educating public on the importance of participating in voting as a responsible citizen.

How will this concept improve election accessibility for everyone?

If the important information on where to vote, how to vote are well known among voters, everyone who wants to vote will be aware how to find a accessible way to vote.

How well does this concept adapt to the changing needs of different voter communities?

if the community scenario changes, the content of the toolkit can be modified to capture the local information

What kinds of resources – whether time, money, people, partnerships, technology or otherwise – will be needed to get this concept off the ground?

it shall partner with local care center, and community to distribute the material. It also shall partner with Radio station to distribute the voting help line.

Great ideas here, Zhou! We're looking forward to collaborative discussions and builds as our Concepting phase continues. You can add any thoughts from other collaborators that you like to your concept by hitting the Update Entry button up on the right.

Another thing you might want to check out is our Personas for Concepts tip sheet. It's a helpful outline of the kinds of accessibility needs we're designing for in this challenge: http://bit.ly/vote_personas. Perhaps you'll be inspired by one or more of the personas and have a think about how your concept could be further extended to meet their needs? We're looking forward to seeing discussions flourish here and your ideas evolve.

Zhou - I like this concept; in some places there has already been a lot done on accessibility already (e.g., in the Challenge intro video they talk about all the great stuff they have in place) and as such there may be great benefit in ensuring the voters know what support they already have.

I wonder if you even need to have a way to identify the voters for this sort of information. Could this toolkit be available to anyone who wants the information? The material could be in several formats to allow everyone to pick the one that suits them the best - audio, print, visual etc.

Thanks...really like the "tool kit" concept for comprehensive voter education and for distributing simplified, useful instructions. Regardless of the voting system design adopted, this concept is reminder of the critical nature of the instructional element.

I love the simplification idea of a tool kit and agree that the kit needs to hold all information without being too overwhelming!

Did you see my 'Fast Facts' inspiration? http://www.openideo.com/open/voting/inspiration/fast-facts/

someone has tried this kind of idea but not executed it that well... might be a nice area to look at and learn from!

Hi Zhou, great concept! I like how you've thought through the different pieces of information voters need to prepare to cast a ballot. You might want to check out our Guiding Principles for this challenge, particularly the section that discusses how we're using the word 'accessibility' here http://bit.ly/AiJnLW. Perhaps it'll inspire you to think about the different elements of this toolkit that can support independent and private voting for people with different accessibility needs? Looking forward to seeing how your concept develops!
