How might we design an accessible election experience for everyone? Read the challenge brief

Concept

Vote Anywhere!

People should be allowed to vote at the places they visit most
I think by bring the voting polls to more places that people frequent often will solve a lot of issues for example the time the process takes, and the long lines.
So how about putting these voting polls at drug stores, gas stations, bus and train/metro stations, post offices.
Rather then hiring more people to work as clerks, the government can train the managers or the station masters to handle the process.  If people come to vote at these places they will most probably buy something even if they don't need it.
As the voting day approaches government can send out these kits that consists of everything that will be needed that day.

How will this concept improve election accessibility for everyone?

I think this method can make the voting experience very accessible and if voting is available at so many locations than people wouldn't have to travel to places out of their reach to keep the democracy going.

What kinds of resources – whether time, money, people, partnerships, technology or otherwise – will be needed to get this concept off the ground?

There just needs to be good planning and organization. Along with that the volunteers involved need to be educated about the process and the incentives for helping out with the process!

This method would definitely make the voting process more accessible to voters. If voting was as easy as going to the store where I get milk every week that would be great. I wonder how these store owners would feel administering the voting process and how they would be additionally compensated for their efforts. One other concern is the time and effort needed to train all these people. It may take a long time and a lot of manpower but I think adding voting booths at some popular places makes a ton of sense. I know I wouldn't dread the voting process as much as I do if I could do it an establishment I frequent everyday or everyweek. I hate having to look up where the voting center is, get directions, find parking and navigate a place I don't know. This solves that.

and why not send your vote with the Amtrack driver or engineer?

Another concept that touches on the nature of how people/voters interact with other routine and civic activities. Like the focus on making voting accessible in places where voters already frequent. Thanks.

Hi Sana, some great thinking here! One thing you might want to check out is our Personas for Concepts tip sheet. It's a helpful outline of the kinds of accessibility needs we're designing for in this challenge: http://bit.ly/vote_personas. Perhaps you'll be inspired by one or more of the personas and have a think about how your concept could be further extended to meet their needs? We're looking forward to seeing discussions flourish here and your ideas evolve. You can make updates to your entry at any time using the Update Entry button up there on the right.

Interesting concept Sana building on several inspirations (voting while commuting, voting at the pharmacy, etc.). I like the idea of building on people's practices and routines to make the process easier. The concept Polling day every day http://www.openideo.com/open/voting/concepting/polling-day-s-every-day.-vote-when-you-can-when-you-want-during-any-period-of-an-election-term./ also plays with this idea. It might be interesting to build on this.
It could also be interesting to start picking 2 or 3 locations or activities where voting could take place and see how you can unpack the practicalities involved in this: how to vote? with what (a paper ballot? online?)? how to make sure the vote is safe? ...

Sana, I thought you might want to build on this concept as it's looking at two specific locations, taking into account the social practices associated with these spaces: http://www.openideo.com/open/voting/concepting/use-your-bank-or-doctors/
