Mindful LeadershipUnderstanding how Mindful Leadership and meditation techniques can be a powerful force to improve a lot more than just work performance.
The IDEO team (Suzy Stone and Chris Grantham ) spoke with Janice Marturano, a pioneer in Mindful Leadership, to understand how being more mindful can improve much more than just work performance, here's our story:
Janice Marturano is the Executive Director of the Institute for Mindful Leadership, a non-profit organization dedicated to training and supporting mindful leadership using the power of meditation. Janice is a Wall Street trained lawyer who left corporate life to found the institute in 2010.
The following insights are drawn from our conversation. They include an inspirational quote and some provocative questions that stem from it.
Today’s workplace health challenges are about creating space for the mind
“24/7 connectivity, multi-tasking, long working hours and demanding travel schedules mean that many office workers suffer from lack of mental space which reduces concentration. Meditative techniques are wonderful for increasing focus, clarity, creativity and compassion”
How might we encourage workers to find more mental space?
How might we create more employer responsibility for mental as well as physical health in the workplace and the employee’s community?
Health objectives can be business objectives.
“We used to do a good job of selling meditation as a solution to a business performance objective. We would gather research data before and after meditation classes which shows that employees felt less distracted as a result”
How might we make the pursuit of mental space feel like a grounded business discipline, something a business can’t do without?
How might we use the vernacular of business to make health thinking seem more complimentary to business thinking?
To quote Ghandi, we have to ‘be’ the change we want to see
“At the beginning I was a closet meditator, then people started to notice the change in me. They noticed I was more ‘present’ in conversations and seemed somehow refreshed and said ‘I need some of that’. Some asked me for a way to involve their whole workforce.”
How might ‘health’ be a route to more authentic and productive leadership?
How might leaders be encouraged to embody a healthier lifestyle in order to explore themselves as an authentic leader and influencer?
How might we create viral change on a massive scale by enlightening whole groups of ‘ambassadors’ at a time?
Creating mental space has a profound ripple effect
“We practice Mindful Leadership as a business discipline, but the benefits for employees are also much happier home lives. People would typically feedback that ‘my wife actually feels listened to now’ and that their loved ones feel they have become ‘more of who they are’.”
How might we create employee benefits that directly improve the quality of family life and in turn create a happier, less stressed and therefore healthier employee?
Meditation bonds employees on a new level
“The connections that happen between participants are deep and profound”
How might we help people share a journey of self-discovery through health or wellbeing activities?
