Making Policy Public (US)

Using graphic design to explore and explain public policy.
We all know public policy is devised for us as citizens – yet often it fails to make sense to the very people it seeks to serve. The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) facilitates collaborations between policy experts and design professionals to produce foldout posters that make complex policy issues more appealing to understand. Making Policy Public http://makingpolicypublic.net/ aims to make information on policy truly public: accessible, meaningful and shared. At the same time they want to create opportunities for designers to engage social issues without sacrificing experimentation and for advocacy organizations to reach their constituencies better through design. They've covered policy relevant to immigrants, vendors, folks that get arrested (don't try this at home!), and clarified topics like social security and predatory equity.

"Our work grows from a belief that the power of imagination is central to the practice of democracy, and that the work of governing must engage the dreams and visions of citizens." – CUP.

Yes. Love this and the intersection of design and policy. Another great example of this is Alan Siegel's "Lets Simplify Legal Jargon" project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyemG7V5ynQ.

Why are designers the only ones who are getting this? Lawyers need to get on board with making contracts, policy, rules more accessible to everyone. Yucky design and legal jargon doesn't benefit anyone really. (Well, maybe lawyers and that's about it...)

Nice one, Brandon. GOOD magazine also do a great job of demystifying complex issues with their ongoing infographic series: http://www.good.is/infographics

I'm reminded on this - how can we change anything if we don't understand what is going on!
