Sarah Bird

"socially enterprising"

I've been working in "appropriate technologies" since I took Amy Smith's class in 2002 and had my life spun upside down - in the best way possible. Since then I've worked in Haiti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Pakistan and Peru on a variety of projects including open-source mobile-data collection, water purification, and making charcoal from agricultural waste products. My biggest project to-date was co-founding a social enterprise called SaafWater in 2007 in Karachi, Pakistan. We ran for 2.5 years until we sadly closed in Nov 2009. Although I'm still a little sore from the experience, I learnt a lot in the process and am happy to share where I can.

Create a simple directory that automatically creates a web-page for every farm (in the relevant catchment). Give each farm a code and put that on the food label.

A mash-up of two ideas: Create a simple directory that automatically creates a web-page for every farm (in the relevant catchment). Give each farm a code and put that on the food label.

A testimonial for hope in the world: http://bit.ly/pkhope - The Pakistan you don't see in the news. My amazing friend Ali Habib and his colleagues organized the inspiring Design for Change contest in Pakistan which reached out to so many more kids than they imagined and the results continue to inspire me. Please spread far and wide. (Warning: May leave you with hope and optimism for our future).

Totally in line with open IDEO concepts, kids aged 8-13 from all over Pakistan were asked to Feel, Imagine, Do and Share to address social problems in their community.

Do watch the documentary at http://bit.ly/pkhope

Hi Sarah, just seconding Krassimira's kudos. You've given very meaningful, in-depth feedback, while also developing strong concepts (I particularly liked "Virtual Bone Marrow Registration" & "Sponsor me with a swab").
