Ritual Schoolhouse: a Seasonal Migration of Space
The rhythms & rituals of life in southern India are set by the monsoon. This schoolhouse, made of a shipping container and a bamboo "track system", allows for screens to be secured during poor weather, and opened wide during beautiful days. I borrowed on Meena's beautiful mural / blackboard idea for the outside of the screens... providing an outdoor learning space. The inside of the screens can be used for projection. I was inspired by a Paul Rudolph house with a similar concept (metal track system) but wanted to incorporate low cost, indigenous materials. I think it's important that children have space that inspire them for learning... spaces that feel open and playful, where they are free to move about and be physical while learning.
