Morning Market

I found this idea, from the Zikulise Community Upliftment Project in Kwa-Zulu Natal South Africa. The idea is that they created a facility that house a morning market where people in a community, after being trained in skills that they are interested in, can showcase their work. The area also offers interaction between community members, job creation and skills development. Training centers need to provide a wide range of skills development areas that feed into the needs of the community. "A once-a-month Saturday Morning Market is facilitated by Zikulise. The market offers local small business owners to market and showcase their products. It also offers current and past Zikulise trainees the opportunity to market and advertise their businesses. The market has been successfully operating since March 2010."

How to make cities more comfortable for people

I watched Candy Chang present a TED Talk several years ago online. To quote her site: "Candy Chang is an artist, designer, and urban planner who likes to make cities more comfortable for people. She's a TED Fellow, Urban Innovation Fellow, and co-founder of Civic Center and Neighborland." Her ideas for urban rejuvenation are refreshing and unique. What I feel most relevant about her projects is that she focuses on the people that live in the neighborhood. Her process is participative and iterative, which I feel directly relates to the Steelcase challenge. A process of incorporation will help to identify solutions, possibilities and areas of need.
